8th Grade Illuminated Letters

8th graders learned how to make typography pop by creating illuminated letters. The idea of illuminations began in the middle ages when scribes would create the drop-cap first letter of a page with endless detail. We threw the idea of "less is more" out the window with this project, and they decorated until there was no space left to decorate. It was important to fill in each space, and since this wasn't the beginning of an actual text, they created a border around the letter as well. They all chose the first letter of their name, and drew a gothic-version of that letter, then filled in the space with gothic pattern details. Then, they painted in watercolor and outlined in black oil-pastel or sharpie.
