Abstract name designs

The 5th graders are learning about the 5 basic concepts of art: shape, form, value, line, color. We applied this knowledge today by creating abstract art with the positive and negative space in our names.

How can negative space create form?

First, we wrote our names with bold black lines on square paper as tall as we could make them:

\

Next, we cut our paper into 16 squares, and glued them down, creating abstract shapes and forms.

The last step is to choose 2 colors in oil pastel and color in the negative space, but it is important to focus on the shapes the black lines create, and not think about 16 separate squares.

Here are the AMAZING final results... abstract art isn't so hard to make after all!

How awesome are the final results?
